An Inspirational Talk
A couple of weeks ago I went to an event at HB Studios that was very inspiring. It was an evening with Amanda Quaid, an actress who is currently starring in a production of “The Illusion” at the Signature Theatre Company. She began by sharing with the audience a little bit about her background and journey as an actress, and then later the moderator opened it up to a question and answer period.
She was very inspiring because she talked a lot about her struggles to “make it”- about how she was determined and disciplined in her career: always knocking on doors, making calls, creating original work to show case herself, and most of all, grounding herself in her passion for what she loved to do. One of the questions she got from an audience member was, “what kept you going? What kept you fromleaving the business despite all of the challenges?” And her answer was simple, yet so truthful: “I love the theatre..I love everything about it…”.
She talked about the different kinds of directors thats shes worked with, (both pleasant and unpleasant experiences), her time at Vassar College, and her experience of being a teacher as a way to support herself, and lots of other things. She also talked about how she grounded herself in gratitude as a way of alleviating her nerves before an audition or show.
I got a lot out of this talk because not only did she inspire me and remind me of where I want to be, but she was also very humble and honest and compassionate, and seemed genuine in her support of fellow artists.
HB does these talks with different artists on a regular basis. Will post about the next one. 🙂
