Growing Up Gonzalez
On Saturday nite I went to see a one-man show called “Growing Up Gonzalez”. It was performed by Andres Rodriguez and written by Felix Rojas. It was performed at the Jan Hus Playhouse on East 74th Street.
The play was hilarious (especially for the Puerto Rican members of the audience) because of all of the references to his latino culture and his experiences growing up in the Bronx. The story revolves around two brothers, Johnny and Cisco (both played by Rodriguez) who are both very different from each other. Cisco, the “good one”,who stays at home and close to his parents, and Johnny, the “blacksheep”of the family who causes shame and grief to his parents by getting involved in drugs and violence. When Cisco dies, Johnny is forced to come back home and face his pain and regret about the life that he has chosen. It was a packed house and among the audience members was none other than Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor.
This is a great show worth seeing, and will only be running a few more weeks, so check it out: http://www.growingupgonzales.com
