“Elvira” – a play by Jessica Carmona

Another exciting thing that our company, Si Se Puede Productions, has going on right now is our development of the play, “Elvira”, by Jessica Carmona. The play is based on the real life story of Elvira Arellano, often referred to as the “Rosa Parks” of the immigration rights movement. It was very exciting to produce a workshop production of the play this summer at the Clarion Theatre here in NYC. We had packed audiences the entire weekend and even Elvira Arellano herself was at the opening night!!

It was an honor to bring the story of this inspirational woman to life!! Playing this role really enabled me to understand the plight of many immigrants and the challenges that they face. After each show, we had a talk back session in which we were able to hear back from audience members about their reactions to the piece and how they personally have been effected by immigration reform. It was a very moving and powerful time.

Our plan is to develop the play even further, incorporating feedback that we received, and take the play to various universities and organizations thruout the country over the course of the next year. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!!!

PS-I’ve added some production photos below!!!
